BUSINESS SUMMARY
Tesco – the leading supermarket in Britain With small grocery stores under the Tesco Metro brand name, big supermarkets outside cities (Tesco Extra) and 24-hour stores, the British Group, Tesco, is the king of supermarkets in Britain. Apart from being the national leader in the food sector, it is proud of selling everything to satisfy all its customers’ needs – books, CD/DVD/mini-discs, hi-fi and household appliances, household equipment, flowers, wine, apparel – the list goes on and on! With an eye to the future, Tesco has adapted to the rapid technological changes. It makes an astonishing profit from its on-line sales site – Tesco.com. Tesco Express also owns gas [petrol] stations and provides financial services: a joint venture with the Royal Bank of Scotland enables it to offer life insurance and general insurance (home, car, pet, travel), credit cards and advantageous loan and savings schemes. With almost 900 stores in all, today Tesco is a global player. It is well established in Ireland, Central Europe (Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic) and Asia (Thailand and South Korea). A hold which has, once more, increased on the British territory, thanks to the takeover of its competitor T & S Stores in January 2003.

With more than 119 supermarkets in the UK, and around 43, 000 employees, the Morrison Supermarket Group specializes in supermarket distribution, offering only quality products and increasing diversity. Food products, music and video, beauty and health – you can get anything there. And most sites have gas stations. It has eight departments/products in all: Market Street sells a whole range of fresh products: Fish Monger sells fish, directly from fishing ports. Oven Fresh offers a range of fresh ready-made dishes and Fresh Pizzas a wide variety of take-out pizzas. Salads and Sandwiches is a sort of self-service, for an off-the-cuff lunch. Then there is Family Butcher for meats, savory and sweet tarts from The Pie Shop and cakes, breads and Danish pastries from Family Bake. A quality offer which should increase even more, for the British group just throw a friendly tender offer on its colleague Safeway, the owner of more than 500 supermarkets in Great-Britain.
